Messiaen – Quartet for the End of Time
Beethoven– Piano trio Op11 for clarinet, cello & piano.
Messiaen wrote Quartet For The End of Time while a prisoner of war in German captivity and it was first performed by his fellow prisoners. It is generally considered one of his most important works.
The Piano Trio in B flat major, Op 11 started life in the winter of 1797–8 as a trio for the rare combination of clarinet, cello and piano. It was probably the Viennese clarinettist Joseph Bähr, for whom Beethoven wrote the original version of the work. This afternoon Ben Aldren steps into his shoes.
