Essence of Place

The Pembrokeshire/Ceredigion landscape and it’s vernacular buildings have lured artists and poets for centuries.

In this 5-day retreat workshop we’ll have space to ponder the essence of this particular area of Wales and we’ll have time to intensify our painting practice. Outdoor sketching at various locations will serve as reference material for ongoing mixed media work. 

Simple, fun exercises will enhance looser work and show us how to analyse and represent elements of landscape with man-made objects, including gates, stone walls and buildings. We’ll pursue exciting compositions using size, scale and the illusion of perspective.

In the studio we’ll use of collaged maps, corrugated cardboard, takeaway coffee cups and a plethora of other items found and recycled; everyday materials that will initiate fresh ideas taking our work off on unsuspected tangents.

The emphasis will be on experimentation and garnering new techniques rather than producing finished work.

Pete has very kindly agreed to come to Rhosygilwen in March next year to host a residential painting retreat. In addition to his excellent guidance, the course is full board at Rhosygilwen with prices from £550 Non–Residential, £900 Residential, £375 accommodated, not attending, sharing with person attending. Places can be reserved in the first instance by paying a deposit of £150.00
