Abstract Concepts in Landscape Painting
20th – 25th September 2026
All art is in some fundamental way abstract – translating what we see of the real world into shapes colours tones and marks. To recognise this and to develop an understanding of a basic abstract visual language of your own is the concern of this course.
We shall be making trips into the landscape and making painting studies directly from nature-gathering resource material for further work in the studio. These primary studies abstracted from the landscape will be able to focus on our own understanding of abstraction and its essential pictorial elements, distilling every day facts into a pictorial construction and a painting.
There will also be an illustrated talk on ‘’Landscape Painting and Abstraction’’ with discussion on what is Abstract Painting to enhance the course further.
A materials list will be provided on application to the course.

Christopher says
“I see painting as a way of making a connection to “something” much larger. It reveals the experience of being alive within the landscape, and its forces and spaces. The work of the artist is to peel away the outer descriptive surface, so as to create a vivid feeling of the experience. This can be achieved through the expressive medium of drawing and painting. It is a mix of the artist personally identifying with the landscape or motif, and a fully functional pictorial construction that will realise a personal vision.”
