DRAWING LANDSCAPE

Tutor:         CHRISTOPHER BAKER

Dates:         5 DAYS

ABOUT YOUR COURSE:

Drawing is the cardinal discipline through which the artist may gain possession of their subject, it is the basis of their first endeavours. Landscape artists Claude Lorraine, Turner, Constable, Bonnard and Peter Lanyon all used drawing as a way of seeing their first thoughts and developing an artistic language.

Experience the landscape through varied drawing strategies that will combine techniques with ways of seeing. These will be works carried outside in front of different landscape types and will be landscape drawing for its own sake. We shall also look at the function of drawing as preparation for painting, relating primary studies to studio pieces.

There are three fundamental objectives in this course: firstly, to enlarge your visual vocabulary through drawing, line, mark, observation, tonality, idea and materials. Secondly, to look at the relationship of primary studies carried out in the landscape to later works in the studio: framing, format, scale, motif, abstraction and fundamental idea. Thirdly, create something personal and help define the individual’s response to the idea of landscape.

By the end of the course you will have learnt an extensive range of ways of drawing and connecting with landscapes. You will have learnt how to simplify reality into pictorial elements and revealed your own artistic personality.
